Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What tariff consulting services does Jade provide?

Jade International offers HTS classification review, duty rate analysis, free trade agreement utilization (USMCA, etc.), Section 301 tariff guidance, duty drawback coordination, landed cost modeling, and compliance audit support to optimize your import costs.

Section 301 tariffs are additional duties (typically 7.5-25%) on certain Chinese imports implemented in recent years. They apply to thousands of product categories.

USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) provides duty-free treatment for qualifying goods traded between the three countries. Products must meet origin rules based on regional value content or production.

HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) classification assigns 10-digit codes determining duty rates. The importer of record is legally responsible for proper classification. Jade’s licensed brokers offer classification assistance services to ensure accuracy and avoid penalties.

Incorrect classification can result in underpaying duties (leading to penalties and back-duty assessments) or overpaying duties (wasting money).

Duty drawback refunds 99% of duties paid on imported goods that are subsequently exported or destroyed. This applies to unused goods, rejected merchandise, or goods incorporated into exported products.

Free trade agreements like USMCA reduce or eliminate duties on qualifying goods traded between partner countries. Qualification requires meeting origin rules and obtaining proper certificates.

Foreign trade zones are designated areas where imported goods can be stored, manipulated, or manufactured with deferred or reduced duties. FTZs offer duty savings, inverted tariff relief, and cash flow benefits.

Jade reduces landed costs through: accurate classification preventing overpayment, FTA utilization for duty-free treatment, duty drawback recovery, supply chain restructuring advice, bonded warehousing for duty deferral, and consolidated shipping to reduce freight costs. We analyze your specific situation for optimization opportunities.

Jade International assists with requesting binding rulings from CBP on classification, valuation, origin, and other customs matters. Binding rulings provide official determination and protect against future penalties when following the ruling.
