I was recently asked by a colleague and was challenged to write about why I do what I do. I thought about the question and the more I reflected, the more valid it seemed. Without trying to be exhaustive, here is some of that thinking.
I am intrigued by the idea of international commerce—the way companies around the world produce, buy, and sell; the global supply chains that tie them together; and the many ways these networks overlap. Truly, the world can be a very small place and at times seems to be getting smaller every day. Ships, planes, trucks, railroads, barges, and ocean freight services continue to fascinate me as much now as when I was a small boy. Logistics is a large and varied industry, encompassing everything from freight forwarding to customs brokerage, and I am thankful to be a part.
The people I have met through the years are wonderful and have added much flavor to my life. In some ways, we want, think, and seek many common interests, yet in others, each person is unique. The way my clients and colleagues face challenges and find solutions always amazes me. The creativity I see each day as people work to find answers also gives me insight into ways that help my firm and my life. I look forward to each day working and serving these people, hopefully making their businesses better and their lives richer—even if only in a small way.
I get to work directly with a group of dedicated and caring people here at Jade International, and I have had the opportunity to work with many of them for 26 years now. They take their work personally and share my passion for the industry, providing services ranging from freight management and tariff consulting to warehousing and domestic shipping. We serve clients, suppliers, and customers with integrity. I also get to serve them and impact their lives—seeking better benefits, improving our work environments, planning for the future, and continually enhancing our skills and company.
I try to treat each person I work with honestly, truthfully, kindly, and respectfully. Every email, phone call, and conversation carries significance for me. I engage with people from different countries, races, and beliefs who treat me similarly, sharing their thoughts and opportunities. They remind me why I do what I do—with every email, meeting, or WhatsApp chat, truly making the world a little better, one interaction at a time.
